Title: "Arthropod-borne diseases in Greece and their relevance for pet tourism"
Abstract: Of 153 dogs from the environs of Athens, Greece 63 (41.2%) possessed antibodies
to Ehrlichia canis. Infections with Borrelia were found in 35 (22.9%) animals. In addition, 28
(18.3%) dogs were infected with Leishmania and 20 (13.1%) with Dirofilaria immitis.
Babesia canis (2.6%) and Hepatozoon canis (0.7%) were less frequently diagnosed.
Thus, dogs are particularly exposed to ehrlichiosis, borreliosis, leishmaniosis and
dirofilariosis in Greece. Infection with Babesia canis seems to occur less often. However,
dogs in poor condition or from non-endemic regions such as Germany are highly susceptible
and may develop clinical babesiosis. Hepatozoon canis seems to be of minor importance in
the study area. Language: German

Title: “Generation of reference values for the characterization of lymphocyte subpopulations
in the peripheral blood of dogs and cats" Language: German
Abstract: Generation of reference values for the characterization of lymphocyte
subpopulations in the peripheral blood of dogs and cats. To provide the diagnostic tool of
immunophenotyping to small animal practitioners we established the quantitation of
lymphocyte subpopulations in the peripheral blood by flow cytometric analysis in a routine
diagnostic laboratory. We determined reference values specific for the antibodies and
methods used. Relative percentages of B-lymphocytes and T-lymphocyte subsets in the
peripheral blood from 36 clinically healthy normal dogs and 31 cats were measured and
analyzed using a standardized gating technique. The results of the quantitative assessment
of the lymphocyte subpopulations are comparable to the values reported for these animals
in the literature. To determine the lymphocyte subpopulations in animals with clinical signs,
blood samples from 11 feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) positive cats were analyzed.
All cats showed a decreased percentage of CD4(+) lymphocytes and a characteristic
inversion of the CD4(+)/CD8(+) T cell ratio.
