Abstract: Feline arterial thrombembolism (ATE) - mainly of the abdominal aorta - is a dramatic acute disease, leading to ischemia of the affected region and to death in most cases. Findings of 15 cats with ATE were analysed retrospectively and compared to 30 cats without cardiovascular diseases. Cats suffering from ATE showed bilateral paraplegia/paraparesis (n = ll), missing or weak pulse (n=ll), painful hind legs (n = 9) and cold/cyanotic paws (n = 7), dyspnoea (n = 10), anorexia (n = 5), vomitus (n=5). Thrombi in the abdominal aorta were from 1.2 to 2.5 cm long and up to 0.5 cm in diameter. Coagulation thrombi commonly develop during reduced blood flow in the dilated left atrium. In cases of ATE the left atrium was sized up to 4.0 x 10.0 x 2.4 cm (up to 31.4 ml) (normal: 1.5 x 2.0 x 0.5 cm; 0.6 ml). Histologically marked fibrotic remodelling of the atrial myocardium was seen. Based on clinical and/or pathological findings the underlying cardiomyopathy was identified as HCM (n=4), RCM (n = 3) or UCM (n = 6). In two cases thrombi were probably caused by hypercoagulability due to inflammatory/septic diseases. In contrast to the impressing clinical symptoms the morphological findings in skeletal muscles of the hind legs appear mild. The muscles are pale and histologically mild degeneration of muscle cells and nerves could be seen. The owner should be informed about degree, bad prognosis and kind of the disease. Therapy predominantly needs analgesia and heparin is used preventing further thrombus formation. In addition, therapy of the cardiomyopathy is required.
