EU-research project - gloworm

For 2 years now LABOKLIN has been involved in the EU-research project "gloworm" which aims at an optimised management of detection and prevention of parasitic diseases in cattle and small ruminants.

European Travel Bursary launched

Did you ever wonder how canine leishmaniasis is treated in Istanbul, what racing injuries are common in huskies in Norway, how feline vaccination protocols look like in Malaga or what referral services for companion animals are available in Estonia? Well, now you and a group of your local colleagues can find out first hand, have your expenses paid and you might even make some new friends while doing it.
In order to improve the understanding of companion animal veterinarians in Europe at “grass root” level, the FECAVA, the Federation of European Companion Animal Veterinary Associations, has launched the FECAVA LABOKLIN Travel Bursary together with Laboklin at  their latest meeting in Helsinki. The Bursary which is granted once a year will enable two groups of small animal practitioners from two different parts of Europe to visit each other, to observe each other’s daily work, to enjoy their local culture and to learn from another.

Gloworm Meeting Dublin

LABOKLIN searches together with experts from Europe to control helminth infections in livestock.
The title of the project is gloworm.
The 2nd GLOWORM General Assembly/Scientific Meeting was held on 16-17 September 2013 in Dublin to consider the progress to date.
Previous data on the different project parts were presented and discussed.
Good progress of the multispecies- test, developed by the FU Berlin, was reported. Antibodies against Fasciola hepatica, Dictyocaulus vivparus, Ostertagia ostertagi, Haemonchus contortus and Cooperia oncophera will be detectable simultaneously in bovine sera. Furthermore a Lamp-test by the Moredun Research Institute was developed to detect H. contortus.   This test approves to be 10times more sensitive than common PCR methods.
A third test detecting SNP‘s (single nucleotide polymorphism), which are responsible for benzimidazole resistance, is under construction.
The second aim of Gloworm is the development of transmission models for several nematode species, which might further lead to control strategies.
The models for Ostertagia ostertagi, Cooperia oncophera, Teladorsagia circumcincta und Haemonchus contortus are in process.
A database for spatial analysis and modeling of gastrointestinal parasite transmission is expected beginning next year.
The university of Ghent presented a web-based tool, ParaCalc®, which enables individual cost analyses  of parasitic infections and their treatment approaches and their economic impact.
